OSSSC Nursing Officer 2025 Syllabus & Exam Pattern: How to Start Preparing for the 4433 Posts

If you read my last post, you already know the big news: 4,433 Nursing Officer vacancies are coming to Odisha.

Now, the excitement is over, and the fear started in you. “What should I study?” “Will the syllabus change because it is for CHO posts?” “I am weak in Math, will I fail?” etc and etc.

Relax. I have analyzed the previous year’s papers and the OSSSC trends, and I am going to break down the Syllabus and Exam Pattern in the simplest way possible.

You don’t need to read 50-page PDFs. You just need to understand this strategy first.

The Exam Pattern

Before you pick up a book, you need to know how the match is played. OSSSC keeps it very simple.

  • Total Questions: 100
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Time: 2 Hours (120 Minutes)
  • Type: MCQ on OMR Sheet.
  • Negative Marking:0.25 (1/4th). If you guess 4 wrong answers, 1 mark will be cut from your correct answers. So, no “Jai Jagannath” guessing in the exam hall.

The Syllabus -Where to Focus ?

This is where most students make a mistake. They spend days studying Math and English, forgetting that 85% of the paper comes from their own Nursing subjects.

1. Nursing Subjects (60 Marks)

This is your bread and butter. Questions will come from your GNM/B.Sc textbooks.

Community Health Nursing (CHN): Since this vacancy is for “Community Health Officers,” we can expect MAXIMUM questions from here. Read about immunization, national health programs, and communicable diseases carefully.

Anatomy & Physiology: The basics of the human body.

Midwifery (OBG): Pregnancy, labor, and newborn care.

Medical-Surgical Nursing (MSN): Common diseases and treatments.

Pediatrics: Child health and vaccines.

2. Practical Skills (25 Marks)

These questions test your real-life hospital duty knowledge.

  • Examples: “What is the color code for a needle?”, “How do you dispose of biomedical waste?”, “What is the first step in CPR?”

3. Arithmetic (10 Marks)

Many nursing students fear Math. But OSSSC asks HSC (10th Class) standard questions.

  • Topics: Percentage, Average, Profit & Loss, Ratio, Simple Interest.
  • If you are weak in Math, don’t waste months on it. Just learn the basic formulas. Even if you score 5/10 here, you can still top the exam if your Nursing theory is strong.

4. English (5 Marks)

Topics: Grammar (Tense, Preposition, Articles), Synonyms, Antonyms.

It’s only 5 marks. Don’t stress. Just solve 10 grammar questions daily.

How To Prepare ?

If you are confused what to start just follow these steps.

Step 1: Buy a “Competitive” Nursing Book Don’t read your college textbooks cover-to-cover; they are too big. Buy a guide book specifically for “Nursing Officer Competitive Exams” (like Target High or PR Yadav). They have summarized notes and MCQs.

Step 2: The “85-15” Rule Spend 85% of your study time on Nursing Theory + Practical questions. Spend only 15% of your time on Math and English.

Step 3: Practice Previous Year Papers OSSSC often repeats questions. Download the 2021 and 2023 Nursing Officer question papers and solve them. It will give you confidence.

The competition for these 4,433 posts will be fierce. But remember, you only need one seat.

Start with Community Health Nursing today. It is the most scoring subject for this specific CHO vacancy.
