Aadhaar–PAN linking: The deadline to link Aadhaar with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) is 31 December 2025, and the process is mandatory for everyone. Those who fail to complete the linking within the stipulated time may face serious consequences.
In a notification issued on 3 April 2025, the Income Tax Department clarified that individuals whose PAN was issued using an Aadhaar number before 1 October 2024 must complete Aadhaar–PAN linking by the end of this year.
With only a few months left before the deadline, here’s a last-minute, step-by-step guide to help you complete the process smoothly.
What is Aadhaar–PAN linking?
Aadhaar–PAN linking is the process of connecting an individual’s PAN with their Aadhaar number. This helps verify identity and prevents the issue of duplicate PAN cards.

Why is Aadhaar–PAN linking important?
According to Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, any individual who was allotted a PAN on or after 1 July 2017 and is eligible for an Aadhaar number must inform their Aadhaar details in the prescribed manner.
The Income Tax Department has clearly stated in its user manual that PAN will become inoperative if it is not linked with Aadhaar by the deadline.
It is important to note that Aadhaar–PAN linking is automatically completed for new PAN card applicants during the application process.
The Link Aadhaar service is available for individual taxpayers, whether they are registered or unregistered on the e-Filing Portal.

How to link Aadhaar with PAN: Step-by-step guide
Follow these steps to link Aadhaar and PAN online:
Step 1: Visit the e-Filing Portal home page and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ under the Quick Links section. Alternatively, log in to the portal and select Link Aadhaar from the Profile section.
Step 2: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number.
Step 3: Click Continue to proceed with payment through e-Pay Tax.
Step 4: Enter your PAN, confirm it, and provide a mobile number to receive an OTP.
Step 5: After OTP verification, you will be redirected to the e-Pay Tax page.
Step 6: Click on ‘Proceed’.
Step 7: Select the relevant Assessment Year and choose ‘Other Receipts’ as the Type of Payment, then click Continue.
Step 8: The applicable amount will be auto-filled under ‘Others’. Click Continue.
Step 9: Now return to the e-Filing Portal and log in. On the Dashboard, go to the Profile section and click ‘Link Aadhaar to PAN’, or select Link Aadhaar under Personal Details.
Step 10: Enter your Aadhaar number and click Validate to complete the process.
