The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is giving big relief to poor households by making LPG cylinders cheaper by ₹300 compared to normal consumers.
₹300 Cheaper Cylinder for Ujjwala Families
- In Delhi, a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder for general consumers costs ₹853.
- For PMUY beneficiaries, the effective price is ₹553, because the government gives a ₹300 targeted subsidy per cylinder.
- This subsidy is available for up to 9 refills per year in FY 2025‑26 (pro‑rated for 5 kg cylinders), and has been approved to continue with an outlay of about ₹12,000 crore.
How Big the Scheme Has Become
- PMUY started in May 2016 to give LPG connections to poor rural families, especially women.
- The government first targeted 8 crore connections by March 2020, met it early in September 2019, and later expanded the target through Ujjwala 2.0.
- With additional phases and fresh approvals, total sanctioned connections are now around 10.3–10.6 crore beneficiary households.
Rising LPG Use Among Ujjwala Households
A CRISIL‑linked analysis shows that:
- India’s LPG consumption rose from 21.6 million tonnes in FY 2016‑17 to about 31.3 million tonnes in FY 2024‑25, and may touch 33–34 million tonnes in FY 2025‑26.
- Average annual refills for PMUY families increased from 3.9 cylinders in FY 2016‑17 to about 4.5 cylinders in FY 2024‑25, showing more regular LPG use for cooking.
- Non‑PMUY households have stayed at 6–7 refills per year over the last five years.
Why This Matters
- The ₹300 subsidy keeps cooking gas affordable for low‑income households even when global LPG prices fluctuate.
- More LPG usage means less chulha smoke, better health for women and children, and a cleaner environment in rural homes.
If you belong to a poor household without an LPG connection, you can check eligibility and apply for Ujjwala 2.0 through your nearest LPG distributor or official PMUY portal to get a connection and benefit from the subsidy
