Indian railways announces train fare hike, Check The Latest Price Now

Indian Railways has announced a small hike in passenger fares, which will come into effect from 26 December 2025. The change is meant to help the railways manage rising costs while still keeping travel relatively affordable, especially for short-distance and suburban passengers.

What Is Changing in Fares?

  • For non-AC coaches up to 500 km, passengers will pay ₹10 extra per ticket.
  • In Mail and Express trains (non-AC classes), the fare has gone up by 2 paise per km.
  • There is no increase in:
    • Suburban/local trains
    • Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs)
    • Ordinary class journeys up to 215 km, so short-distance travel remains unchanged for many daily passengers.

Why Has the Fare Been Increased?

Indian Railways says this is a “rationalisation” of fares to handle rising expenses, not a heavy burden on passengers.

  • The change is expected to bring in about ₹600 crore extra revenue in the current year.
  • In the last decade, rail services have expanded into remote regions, which has pushed up running costs.
  • Manpower cost has risen to around ₹1.15 lakh crore, and pension payments are about ₹60,000 crore, taking total operating costs to nearly ₹2.63 lakh crore in 2024–25.

To manage this, Railways is trying to balance:

  • Higher freight (cargo) loading
  • Small increases in passenger fares

Officials also point out that better operations have helped improve safety and made India the world’s second-largest cargo-carrying railway system, so the extra revenue is meant to keep trains safer and more reliable while only modestly raising passenger fares.
