Winter has finally arrived properly in Odisha, and the cold wave is real now. Night temperatures have dropped sharply, with many places recording below 10°C in the last 24 hours.
Coldest Places Right Now
- G. Udayagiri is among the coldest, with minimum temperature around 4–5°C, making it feel like a mini hill station.
- Semiliguda (Koraput) has also gone close to 5–6°C, while Phulbani is hovering near 6–7°C.
- Even the plains are chilly: Bhubaneswar and Cuttack have dipped to around 12–13°C at night.
Dense Fog Warning
The IMD has issued Yellow warnings for dense fog in parts of Odisha. Visibility can drop to around 50 metres in some stretches, which is dangerous for early‑morning travellers.
- Foggy districts (on different days) include Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Kandhamal, Koraput and nearby areas.
Why It Suddenly Turned So Cold
Meteorologists say cold, dry north‑westerly winds and a high‑pressure system are pushing down night temperatures across interior and western Odisha, creating a cold‑wave-like situation. This pattern is likely to continue for a few days before easing when the wind direction changes.
Simple Tips Before You Step Out
- Delay morning walks a bit so the sun is up.
- If driving early, go slow and use low‑beam or fog lights in misty areas.
- Give children an extra sweater or cap for school, especially in hilly districts.
