A very sad news has come from KIIT University, Bhubaneswar. A first-year B.Tech student, Rahul Yadav from Chhattisgarh, was found dead inside his hostel room under suspicious circumstances.
The incident has again raised serious questions about student safety, hostel environment, and mental health support on the KIIT campus.
Who Was Rahul Yadav?
Rahul Yadav was a first-year Computer Science Engineering student at KIIT University.
He was staying in one of the university hostels in the Infocity area of Bhubaneswar and had come from Chhattisgarh to study.
How Did the Incident Happen?
According to media reports, Rahul was found hanging in his hostel room on the night of 30 November 2025.
The hostel authorities and students informed Infocity Police, who reached the spot, took charge of the body, and registered an unnatural death case, treating it as a suspected suicide for now.
The police have started an investigation and are trying to find out what exactly happened before Rahul’s death.
So far, no final report has been given about the exact reason, and officers are checking CCTV footage, mobile phone details, and talking to friends, hostel staff, and family members.
Not the First Death at KIIT This Year
This is not the first such case from KIIT in recent months, which is why students and parents are very worried.
Earlier in February 2025, a Nepali student named Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student, was found dead in her hostel room, and the incident led to massive protests by KIIT students.
Other Recent Cases Involving KIIT Students
A few months after Prakriti’s death, another girl student from Nepal was also found dead on the campus in a separate incident.
Together with Rahul’s death, this means three students have died in and around KIIT hostels within about 10 months, which has created fear and anger among many students and parents.
What UGC Fact-Finding Committee Said
Due to the earlier deaths, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had formed a fact-finding committee to study the situation at KIIT.
The committee’s report said that KIIT’s “illegal and unlawful activities,” poor hostel conditions, and negligence in handling student complaints played a role in at least one of the student suicides.
Concerns About Hostel Safety and Mental Health
After these repeated deaths, many people are asking if hostel safety rules, counselling support, and complaint handling systems at KIIT are strong enough.
Students’ groups and activists are demanding better mental health support, stronger anti-harassment mechanisms, and transparent action whenever there is any complaint from a student.
Rahul Yadav’s death is a heartbreaking incident, and it has again shown how important student safety and mental health are in residential universities like KIIT.
While the police investigation is still going on, people across Odisha and other states are hoping that the truth will come out and that strong steps will be taken so that such incidents do not happen again.
